The Hama uRage Series SoundZ 700 7.1 gaming headset with mic put on a test

The uRage gaming headset SoundZ 700 7.1, a gaming headset with mic and excellent base!

As the heading says, this should be a practical test. In doing so, I place great value on everyday handling and comfort when used for a long time. I don’t want to go into the actual sound in detail. The impressions are too individual and different for each user.

Incidentally, I have been using the headset for several months to form a judgment.

First impression of uRage Series

The uRage SoundZ 700 7.1 gaming headset is around 80 euros. Also, it offers a flip-up microphone, enclosing and illuminated ear cups, an operating panel, and a special technology that makes the ear cups vibrate in basses. More on that later.

In hand, the headset looks very high quality. The plastic is held in black matt. Some shiny chrome components create accents. But for my taste they make it look a bit “cheap” again because they are made of plastic.

The ear cups are large enough to enclose large ears completely. So there is no pressure on the ears. The upholstery is very lush and comfortable, which also applies to the upholstery on the headband. In both cases, the cover is made of synthetic leather.

The sheathed cable with 2 meters is sufficient but not lavish in length and comes with a Velcro cable tie.

The Sound

As described at the beginning, I don’t want to take the sound apart scientifically. With a frequency range of 20 Hz – 20 kHz, the headset is in the standard range. Very high-quality headphones go into the bass here up to 15 Hz. Doesn’t matter in this price range.

The sound is round and pleasant. The bass and mid-tones are very dominant and shouldn’t be more robust. So it sounds good for gaming. But listening to music is not optimally balanced.

Thanks to the USB connection, the headset uses its sound card. So if you have a high-quality, dedicated sound card, you should use a standard headset with a jack connection.

The Bass Vibration

This exciting technology was responsible for the fact that I wanted to test exactly this headset. I’ve never seen anything like it before.

There are vibration motors in the ear cups, which start at a specific frequency in the bass range. This should make the game experience even more intense, especially in the event of explosions.

And indeed! If you have the headset in your hand, you can clearly feel how it vibrates in the rhythm of the bass!

Unfortunately, disillusionment follows quickly when worn. The vibration is not transferred to the head due to the very soft and generous padding of the ear cups. Say: you don’t feel it.uRage Gaming-Headset SoundZ 700 7.1

However, I have to say that this makes the bass acoustically “fat” and slightly booming. It can be cool, but it can also be annoying. If that doesn’t suit you, you can deactivate the function by pressing a button on the control panel.

But in itself, a cool thing!

The microphone

As befits a smart headset, the receiver can be folded up.

Unfortunately, this process is so difficult that I have to hold the headset on the side. Otherwise, I pull it off my head. That is a big minus point. If a headset offers this function, it should also have a smooth arm that I can operate with one finger without having to lift the headset firmly.

Incidentally, the microphone cannot be muted by folding it up. You will only find this function on significantly more expensive models. So it doesn’t matter. But if that’s important to you, I recommend a different headset. There is a button on the control panel to mute the microphone.

There is nothing wrong with the sound of the microphone. The voice comes across clearly and is amplified sufficiently without noise. Maybe not suitable for streaming, but communication in the game is excellent.

A big plus point is the freely movable arm of the microphone. You can “bend” it as you please. Very practical if you have a big nose and constantly breathe into the microphone 😉

The comfort of uRage Series

To put it in one sentence: The headset is very comfortable to wear. Neither do you feel pressure marks on your ears over time, and even as a spectacle wearer, it merely sits comfortably on your head.

What strikes you after a while is a weight on your head. At 370 g (I weighed myself), there are significantly lighter colleagues. Possibly, this is also due to the vibration motors.

However, it does not interfere. It is just noticeable.

Due to the closed design, the headset seals off well. However, not too strong as if you had hearing protection on. The topic is also a matter of taste. I personally prefer open systems where I hear the room as if I had nothing on my head. Some like it completely closed off.

With the uRage Series gaming headset SoundZ 700 7.1, I simply describe it as a middle ground.

General handling

I already mentioned a critical point with the microphone. The stiff arm doesn’t have to be a problem if you keep the mic down anyway.

However, what struck me over the weeks was that the control panel has its pitfalls.

For one thing, the keys are very open. So it happens every now and then that you accidentally mutate your microphone or the sound. In other words, you touch the keys without realizing it. Admittedly, that is a bit annoying.

In many other models, the buttons are a little more protected in the housing.

Otherwise, you can no longer say against the handling. What else can I say about a handling headset 🙂

Conclusion on the uRage gaming headset

With the uRage Gaming Headset SoundZ 700 7.1, we have a reliable and great-sounding headset. Sure, it has its quirks, but for around 80 euros, you can no longer expect at specific points. In summary, I like it very much. Above all, it sits comfortably on the head for an extended period. And that’s so important with a gaming headset!

I think it’s a shame that the microarm is so stiff. In my opinion, a product manager should notice this immediately. The topic with the control panel only becomes apparent after a long time. So it can happen.
